Irish Haemophilia Society and Hemophilia Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Twinning partnership
Irish Haemophilia Society (IHS) and Hemophilia Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HSBH) were the official partners within the Twinning program of the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). This partnership officially started in 2003 by agreeing the future cooperation and lasted until 2008.
During the Twinning project Hemophilia Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina has further increased its capacities, communication and organisational skills and became recognized as important and significant factor in developing and improving hemophlia care within Bosnia and Herzegovina. Events organized in cooperation with Irish Haemophilia Society as the Twinning partner raised awareness about hemophilia within the country which significantly supported all HSBH activities, provided education for members of HSBH and clinicians, and supported lobbying for better supply of hemophilia treatment products and better hemophilia care.
Irish Haemophilia Society has also financially contributed to all Twinning activities covering most of its expenses. World Federation of Hemophilia contributed annually by approving Twinning Grant and participating at some of the organized activities.
Strong cooperation between the twinned societies and Haemophilia Treatment Center in Dublin provided for significant product donations whilst the clinicians from Ireland liaised with clinicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina on several occasions.
One of the most important events organized in cooperation with the Irish Haemophilia Society was the first Hemophilia Symposium in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Symposium program featured recognized experts in hemophilia care and research, making it the preeminent event for those interested in hemophilia. All presentations were well attended with topics that ranged from the organization and development of hemophilia care, laboratory follow up, appearance and follow up of inhibitors to coagulation factors, hemophilia and hepatitis C, to physiotherapy in hemophilia.
In addition, Irish Haemophilia Society strongly supported and participated in two summer camps for persons with hemophilia organized in Bosnia and Herzegovina whilst the children from Bosnia and Herzegovina traveled to summer camp in Barretstown, Ireland.
The WFH Hemophilia Organization Twinning Committee presented 2006 Hemophilia Organization Twin of the Year Award to Bosnia and Herzegovina & Ireland for the scope of the activities undertaken in 2006 through twinning partnership, particularly lobbying efforts for recognition of the Haemophilia Treatment Center and increased factor supply, diversified fundraising activities, the recruitment of new volunteers, and the organization of the first Hemophilia Symposium in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
